IOWBSRC Workshop on Black Sea Fluxes

چکیده

The rivers are the main sources both of sediments and pollutants. Their irregular supply from different catchment areas controls the nature of terrigenous sedimentation and contamination of the Black Sea. The role of aerosols in the Black Sea has not yet been estimated. As a result of studies in the Black Sea pre-Caucasian zone, it is revealed that fluxes of sediments and pollutants display a wide range of temporal and spatial variations. The spotty character of their spatial distribution in shallow water areas is conditionsed by peculiarities of the water ciruclation. Noticeable amounts of pollutants are accumulating in some areas of semi-enclosed bay; due to the strong anthropogenic contamination carried by small rivers. The continental rise is the main place of acucmulation of sediments and pollutants on deep basin areas of the Black Sea. Studis performed using sediment traps have revealed that fluxes of sediments and pollutants are much higher in near bottom waters of the shelf, in comparison with their rates of accumulation on the sea floor. A reverse picture is observed on the continental rise of the southwestern deep-sea basin. Additional data are required for budget estimations of both sediments and pollutants in the whole basin.

Stimulation of Autotrophic Denitrification by Intrusions of the Bosporus Plume into the Anoxic Black Sea

Autotrophic denitrification was measured in the southwestern coastal Black Sea, where the Bosporus Plume injects oxidized chemical species (especially O(2) and [Formula: see text]) into the oxic, suboxic, and anoxic layers. Prominent oxygen intrusions caused an overlap of [Formula: see text] and sulfide at the same station where autotrophic denitrification activity was detected with incubation ...

The Black Sea as Natural Laboratory for Biogeochemistry and Microbiology of Anoxic Habitats

The Black Sea is the largest anoxic basin on earth and provides unique conditions for the study of microbial habitats and controls on key anaerobic microbial processes in the element cycles. Arctic climate response to forcing from light-absorbing particles in snow and sea ice in CESM

The presence of light-absorbing aerosol particles deposited on arctic snow and sea ice influences the surface albedo, causing greater shortwave absorption, warming, and loss of snow and sea ice, lowering the albedo further. The Community Earth System Model version 1 (CESM1) now includes the radiative effects of light-absorbing particles in snow on land and sea ice and in sea ice itself. We inve...

Impacts of different dietary lipid sources on growth performance, fatty acid composition and antioxidant enzyme activity of juvenile Black Sea bream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impacts of diets supplemented with different lipid sources on growth performance, body composition, fatty acid profile, and hepatic antioxidant enzyme activity of juvenile black sea bream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli (initial mean weight, 1.1±0.02g). Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated with either fish oil (FO), soybean oil (SO),...
